Forbestown to Feather Falls Trail

Forbestown to Feather Falls Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Two worthwhile features of this trail are just off the main route near the southern end. The Sunset Hill Fire Lookout, 0.5 miles west of the start of the trail, is still manned during summer. The gate is normally open when there is a lookout on duty, and you can often climb up the tower with the lookout’s permission. Constructed in the 1960s, the tower is not one of the most important in the region. Its view is perpendicular to the surrounding ridges with only one face visible, which makes it of limited use in spotting fires. However it does offer great views of Lake Oroville, Bloomer Mountain, and Mooretown Ridge. Special Attractions: Sunset Hill Fire Lookout; Fishing at Ponderosa Reservoir; Long winding forest trail with a moderately difficult, 4-rated section; Forbestown Cemetery. High-clearance 4WDs are preferred, but any high-clearance vehicle is acceptable. Expect a rough road surface; mud and sand are possible but will be easily passable. You may encounter rocks up to 6 inches in diameter, a loose road surface, and shelf roads, though these will be wide enough for passing or will have adequate pull-offs."

Trail has nice views. Nothing to rough. I used my stock '04 Suburban. Had to turn around as all of the gates were closed on the Feather Falls end (I started at the Forbestown end). I will go again, at least to the small lake for some fish!
