Portola Valley lies along the San Andreas Fault in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. These lands were part of a Mexican land grant, Rancho Corte de Madera (meaning cutting of timber), later divided into agricultural ranches acquired by Anglos in the late 1800s.By the end of World War II, further subdivisions divided the larger properties and the area rapidly became suburban. This trail guide includes the following trails: A Loop Trip on Coal Mine Ridge, A Hike or Horseback Ride into History, The Larry Lane Trail.
