The Mill Creek Redwood Preserve encompasses 1 ,534 acres in a richly atmospheric forest along the upper reaches of Palo Colorado Road, just shy of Bottchers Gap. The preserve sits in the shade of dense second-growth redwoods, sycamores, tanbark oaks, and maples on the northern slope of Bixby Mountain. Mill Creek flows through the forest and down the canyon, where it joins with Bixby Creek.
