Point Reyes National Seashore Tomales Point

Point Reyes National Seashore: Tomales Point Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Hiking Tomales Point is invigorating and mysterious. Though hikers are sometimes unsatisfied going back and forth on a single trail, the crashing of the Pacific against the shore and the majestic rocky sculptures and sea cliffs at the point offer a contemplative view that’s worth revisiting. Add to that the stark beauty of the coastal bluffs, often appearing and disappearing in sheets of wispy fog, the whitewashed buildings of Pierce Point Ranch, isolated and haunting on the green hills, and springtime wildflowers, and you’ve got a trail worth visiting again and again. Trails Surface: Double-track dirt trail that rises and falls moderately through grassland and scrub. A single-track dirt trail (1.6 miles) leads to the point."

"Animal sightings are not uncommon in the Bay Area, but there are a few locations where you are nearly assured of a peek at undomesticated creatures. One of the best spots is Point Reyes’s Tomales Point. This hike is a 9.5-mile out-andback trek on a remote peninsula where tule elk roam through coastal scrub and birds paddle in the ocean and soar through the skies. Bring binoculars, a hat, and a windbreaker."
"The stark beauty of this narrow coastal bluff, the ocean often appearing and disappearing in sheets of wispy fog, can be otherworldly and humbling in its implied vastness. Springtime wildflowers add bursts of color along the trail, and the tule elk, a timelessness. Though hikers, as a rule, are generally unsatisfied with a return-trip single trail, the crashing of the Pacific against the shore and the majestic rocky sculptures and sea cliffs offer a contemplative view that’s worth revisiting."
