Sly Park surrounds Jenkinson Lake, a water supply reservoir constructed by the Bureau of Reclamation. The area around the lake is well forested, and because of its elevation (3,500 feet) it has less snowfall than do higher elevations. It is open all year. When the water level is high, it is an attractive lake, but in drought years the water can drop drastically by the end of summer. Specialty birds: Resident—Mountain Quail; White-headed and Pileated Woodpeckers; American Dipper. Summer—Osprey, Western Wood-Pewee, Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Cassin’s Vireo, Black-throated Gray Warbler, Western Tanager, Black-headed Grosbeak, Bullock’s Oriole, Lesser Goldfinch. Winter—Bald Eagle, Western Bluebird. Migrant—Rufous Hummingbird. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, a detailed map, and helpful general information.
