The Monarch Butterfly Grove is a wintering home for thousands of butterflies in a picturesque grove of mature eucalyptus trees. From the grove, a short portion of the hike follows Meadow Creek, then runs along the west edge of the golf course. Various side trails lead across the dunes. At the trail's end is a viewing platform with coastline views of the Shell Beach cliffs and Port San Luis.

As pointed to me by an official docent the butterflies go dormant during cold weather and do not migrate. These are decendants of monarch butterflies that were bred about 80 years ago(on the nearby Nipomo Mesa), for so many generations that these never knew to migrate. The rest of this trail is nearly all next to busy businesses and other activities,
