We did an overnight backpack on this trail, continuing past Y Meadow reservoir to camp at Granite Lake. Though this segment is technically not a maintained trail, it was easy to follow the route which is well used by pack. Granite Lake was beautiful, and pleasantly refreshing for swimming-not nearly as icy as some! Wildflowers along the trail were some of the best I've ever seen, and views were great too. Trail itself was rather dusty from pack use, and there was a relatively large number of other hikers, though not more than I expected for a prime summer weekend. I would do this one again.

The hike from Burst Rock trail head begins in shaded forest with nice grade for out of shape or injured hikers like us. Beautiful wildflowers along the way with vistas of volcanic mountains to the left and views into the Yosemite high country to the right. Fishing in Y Meadows lake was poor as was fishing in Chewing Gum lake. This is contrary to guide information on this area. No fish were spotted in either lake! Both lakes are beautiful for swimming with perfect granite slabs for sunning! We had Chewing Gum lake to ourselves on Sunday and Monday. Y meadows lake we shared with two other parties on Tuesday along with a million blood thirsty mosquitoes. Try this hike in August or later to avoid the bugs. Hike mid week to avoid the crowds, as this is a popular day hiking spot. This would have been a five star hike if not for the mosquitoes and the poor fishing.

Beautiful trail. Outstanding views the whole way. Burst Rock is spectacular. If you get a late start, like we did, you can camp at Powell Lake first.
