Cottonwood Canyon View Professional Review and Guide

"Part of the appeal of the Laguna Mountains is the huge eastern escarpment that drops away to the desert floor—4,000 feet below the forested mountain slopes. The transition is abrupt: forest one moment, hundred-mile desert views the next. Incredibly rugged canyons connect the desert and mountains, which served as migration routes for the Kwaaymii Indians as they headed to higher elevations during spring. On summer days, you can feel the heat of the desert as the wind whistles up the canyon walls. This hike slowly reveals one of these canyons as it works along an old section of the Sunrise Highway, which was hewn into the side of Garnet Mountain. Taking neither much time nor energy to complete, this hike provides one of the best views in the Laguna Mountains."
