This hike is a beach bum’s paradise. The trail begins at the Mattole River Estuary and offers three miles of beautiful black sand beaches, dunes, and tide pools that lead to an abandoned lighthouse. Along the way, there is plenty of secluded beach to comb. Hiking beneath the cliffs at Punta Gorda can be dangerous at high tide, so be sure to plan your hike during low tide. Because low tide comes at different times every day, hikers will need to consult a tide calendar. This information usually is posted at the trailhead. Terrain: Dirt and sand path through grassy dunes and black sand beaches.
