Lower Tubbs Island Trail

Lower Tubbs Island Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The hike to Lower Tubbs Island is an easy trail with surprisingly panoramic views despite the flat terrain. The highlight of the hike is the walk along a mile of Sonoma County’s rarely seen shoreline on San Francisco Bay. The Lower Tubbs Island Trail in the San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge is the ideal way to explore this underappreciated part of the Wine Country. With surprisingly excellent views, the level hike accesses a 1-mile section of wild, undeveloped bay coastline, a rarity in the heavily urbanized Bay Area. The trail is also a fantastic place to observe diverse wildlife, including an exasperating number of birds as well as seals."

"A long, contemplative hike along ranch roads and levee tops leads through the marshlands along Sonoma County’s San Pablo Bay coastline. Expect excellent birding and solitude, especially along the loop on Lower Tubbs Island itself. Depending on the season, hikers can view a variety of plant and animal life along the trail. More than 300 wildlife species either live in or pass through the tidal preserve. Birds are a huge draw: The refuge attracts seabirds and shorebirds galore, including ducks, pelicans, gulls, plovers, and sandpipers. Songbirds and raptors (including northern harriers and white-tailed kites) also nest and hunt in the marshes. Bring a guidebook." Read more
