Echo Mountain Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Attention, historically minded hikers: Put this trail on the very top of your list. This accessible and moderate day hike is popular with trail runners and fitness buffs too—but the real gems here are the leftover bits and pieces of L.A.’s Great Hiking Era, including old railway grades, funicular inclines, and the foundations of what was once a sprawling and famous mountaintop hotel complex."

"Wander through the foothills above Altadena to historic Echo Mountain. Take in clear sky views and visit markers and relics from earlier times. The summit of Echo Mountain lords over the Altadena skyline. Once home to the historic Mount Lowe Railway and the White City Resort, the trek to the top of Echo Mountain is now solely a pedestrian venture best suited for the cool days of winter when skies are azure and the temperature is cool. Mostly sun exposed, the route is best to be avoided during the heat of the day, and hiking during summertime other than near dawn or dusk is folly due to temperatures and smog." Read more
