Dawn Mine Loop

Dawn Mine Loop Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A mostly bushwhacking and boulder-hopping route in Millard Canyon to the site of the Dawn Mine and back out along sections of the historic Mount Lowe Railway, this canyon hike is tougher than its distance would lead you to believe. Budget plenty of extra time for routefinding—and prepare yourself for one of the most epic days you’ll have in the San Gabriels."

"Explore wild and beautifully shaded Millard Canyon and an historic mine, plus take in views of a lovely 40-foot waterfall. The hike to Dawn Mine through Millard Canyon is one of the most underutilized and understated stretches of the Angeles National Forest—natural beauty absolutely flourishes here. The atmosphere is truly stunning. Not only is the gorgeous riparian splendor copious, history abounds in the area as well. Visitors can look forward to seeing remnants of the mine and its operation throughout the canyon, along with the beautiful cascade of Saucer Falls. Hikers can expect to see some other people, but the area isn’t extremely popular, especially once the trail branches up-canyon." Read more

"Millard Canyon’s happily splashing stream, presided over by oaks, alders, maples, and bigcone Douglas-firs, is the main attraction on this hike. But you can also do a little snooping around the site of the Dawn Mine, one of the more promising gold prospects in the San Gabriels, worked intermittently from 1895 until the early 1950s."
