Sand Dollar Beach

Sand Dollar Beach Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Sand Dollar Beach is a protected horseshoe-shaped sand and rock beach between two rocky headlands that jut into the Pacific Ocean. The mile-wide beach cove is backed by Pacific Valley, an expansive marine terrace 1 00 feet above the sea. The grassy bluff offers sweeping coastal vistas. The trail passes a picnic area lined with Monterey cypress trees to the steep, eroded cliffs and an overlook with interpretive signs. From the overlook is access to the shoreline. There are great coastal views of large offshore rock outcroppings. Plaskett Rock sits off the southern point. Cone Peak can be seen inland along the Santa Lucia Range, steeply rising upward to 5,1 55 feet."

"This hike begins along open bluffs blanketed in fragrant coastal scrub and heads south to cliffs overlooking Jade Cove. A steep 100-foot spur descends to a beach brimming with jade that has been sculpted smooth by the pounding surf. The trail then doubles back north toward the horseshoe cove at Sand Dollar Beach." "This hike on national forest land is as superb as it is short. It is conveniently accessed from a day-use area off CA 1. The trail threads a scenic bluff with the bonus of a 0.25-mile-long sandy beach. This hike is on a sublime stretch o ff CA 1 south of Big Sur. Most of the beaches on the coast are in state parks that seldom welcome dogs. Luckily, Sand Dollar Beach is on dog-friendly national forest land. As a bonus, Plaskett Creek campground is just steps away on the southeast side of CA 1." Read more
