Salmon Summit Trail to Red Cap Lake

Salmon Summit Trail to Red Cap Lake Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Salmon Summit National Scenic Trail provides the wilderness traveler with solitude, relatively gentle hiking through cool forest, and occasional ridgetop views of the wild and remote western Trinity Alps. Red Cap Lake is a long way from any population center, but this route to the Salmon Summit trailhead avoids the tedious, serpentine drive to Forks of Salmon and the High Point trailhead described in the previous trip, which provides the other access to the lake. For the relative few who reside west of the Alps, this hike may be one of the closer trips for them."

The trail from the trailhead to Red Cap Lake received full maintenance late summer 2018, so apart from any timber that comes down over the winter it should be in good condition. To reach the trailhead from Orleans, cross the bridge over the Klamath River, immediately turn right, and take Red Cap Road, then Road 10N01 to the trailhead clearly marked with a large sign. The location of the trailhead is not correctly shown on the map on this site. About a mile and a half before the lake, be sure to take the right branch of the trail, if going to the lake. The left branch skirts the southwest slopes of Salmon Mtn., staying about 250 feet below the peak. This branch of the trail hasn't received recent maintenance, and is likely to have some down timber. To get to the peak is a cross-country scramble. The branch trail continues to the pass known as Salmon Summit, and the High Point trailhead. For the most current information on the condition of this and nearby trails, go to the blog on the Web site for Backcountry Press, and look for the entry on Orleans Ranger District Trails, with a link to a frequently-updated PDF file.

High atop a mountain named after the salmon, the Humboldt, Trinity and Siskiyou lines intersect marking the highest point in Humboldt County. But that’s not all... Tucked within its mountain shadow lies Red Cap Lake, a shallow, but wide, 3-acre refresh spot for the “surprised to see us wildlife” and hikers alike.

Hiked this in early June 2018. It was a great hike and appears to be seldom used. The view is great along the way and when you reach the summit. The directions from various sites were confusing and you can take a wrong fork, so having a map is good. Also, some sites indicate that Salmon Summit and Salmon Mountain are the same thing. Those are different destinations. It wasn't clear where to leave the trail and head up to the summit, but we figured it out. Also, the road to the trailhead is a bit rough and our little rental car didn't handle the rocks too well! Overall a fantastic day!
