The trail from the trailhead to Red Cap Lake received full maintenance late summer 2018, so apart from any timber that comes down over the winter it should be in good condition. To reach the trailhead from Orleans, cross the bridge over the Klamath River, immediately turn right, and take Red Cap Road, then Road 10N01 to the trailhead clearly marked with a large sign. The location of the trailhead is not correctly shown on the map on this site. About a mile and a half before the lake, be sure to take the right branch of the trail, if going to the lake. The left branch skirts the southwest slopes of Salmon Mtn., staying about 250 feet below the peak. This branch of the trail hasn't received recent maintenance, and is likely to have some down timber. To get to the peak is a cross-country scramble. The branch trail continues to the pass known as Salmon Summit, and the High Point trailhead. For the most current information on the condition of this and nearby trails, go to the blog on the Web site for Backcountry Press, and look for the entry on Orleans Ranger District Trails, with a link to a frequently-updated PDF file.
