James Irvine Trail/Fern Canyon

James Irvine Trail/Fern Canyon Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This hike features some of best redwoods accessible by trail. In addition to the giant trees, the far end of the trail passes through awesome Fern Canyon and reaches the Paci?c Ocean at Gold Bluffs Beach.

The north coast of California was once covered in vast stands of giant old-growth trees. Due to logging efforts in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, most of these grand forests were lost. Today the ancient trees may be fewer, but there are still places where you can lose yourself in the hushed wilderness of the towering redwoods."

This loop hike is like a time machine. The trek begins by crossing over Prairie Creek & into a old growth redwood forest. Such forests have graced the California Coast for over 20 million years. The route descends into Fern Canyon, a remarkable World Heritage Site. Seven types of ferns, dating from the age of dinosaurs, grow in the canyon. Water drips down the vertical canyon walls on moss cascades. Posted a video of the hike at
