Gold Bluffs Beach has to be the prettiest sand beach in California. Steep sandstone cliffs rise up to more eroded cliffs spiked with towering Sitka spruce. The salt-and-pepper sand beach stretches as far as the eye can see in both directions. There’s a sea mist kicked up by the surf that bathes the scene with billowing white. The waves break far out and slowly comb to shore. What an incredible beach!

This area is beautiful and the elk are interesting, but the campground is essentially a parking lot with some grass in it. I would not recommend tent camping here because the "sites" are about 30 feet away each other with very few trees/shrubs to provide privacy. This is NOT the "best of tent camping in northern California". The way to truly tent camp out of a vehicle in California is to off-road it in the Trinity or Six Rivers National Forests using a map of the logging roads. Otherwise, no matter what campground you go to, it is essentially a parking lot. The only other alternative to get into nature and actually camp is to backpack.
