Weir Canyon Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"The Irvine Ranch Open Space portion of Weir Canyon is only open for scheduled events, including moderate and cardio hikes, mountain bike rides, and equestrian trips. Don’t mix this area up with the adjoining Weir Canyon Trail in Santiago Oaks Regional Park, which is open to the public during regular park hours. Weir Canyon is noted for its oak woodlands and vibrant wildlife.
Native Americans once lived here and ground acorns in bedrock metates. Later, ranchers carried cowhides down the canyon by oxcart. In the late 19th century, a small dam was built on the creek, giving the canyon its present name. The Rifle Range Loop is a commonly scheduled 5-mile hike, passing through a World War II training range before descending the canyon. Longer loops climb onto the slopes above the canyon or link to Fremont Canyon."
