Blackstar Canyon Professional Review and Guide

"Located in the northern end of the Santa Ana Mountains in the Cleveland National Forest. Highlights: Blackstar Canyon is an excellent intermediate ride with a wide dirt road that overlooks chaparral canyons. Hidden Ranch is a cattle ranch at 5.6 miles. An old ranger area, Beeks Point, is at the top. Hazards: Cowpatties, rattlesnakes, mountain lions, and bike-chasing dogs."

A great way to run this route in the summer is in the evening! You still need the Deet bug repellent though. With the next day the 4th, I didn't have to worry about sleeping late! You basically have all fireroads but once you drop over the first ridge to Hidden Valley Ranch watch out for the cows! Big, dumb, and SLOW. AFter running through this area you start your last moderate climb up to old Beek's place and then a little further up to the weather radar dome. If you are REALLY ambitious you can ride all the way over to Silverado Canyon. Me? I turned at this point and raced downhill with all of my lights blazing to avoid those bovine roadblocks! 16.75 miles total, 8.2 MPH avg, 26.8 MPH max, 2:01:44 total time.
