Widow Lake

Old Station, California

Widow Lake Professional Review and Guide

"Isolation. Two trails lead to Widow Lake, but neither is easy, and both are seldom traveled. Traveling north from Jakey Lake, you must hike for miles through viewless forest on a path faded with disuse and sometimes completely obscured by deadfall and underbrush. The trail that leads southeast from Butte Lake, which is described here, includes a pitch steep enough to slow even the hardiest hiker to a crawl. The difficulty of the two access trails, coupled with the lake’s proximity to more easily reached destinations in the Butte Lake area, conspire to make Widow Lake a locale of profound isolation. Highlights: This seldom-visited lake sits in a high basin near the eastern boundary of the park."
