Subway Cave Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The most popular trail in Hat Creek Valley may be the cool, self-guided walk through Subway Cave. The actual cave extends for about 2300 feet, but only 1300 feet are open to the public; the northern half is closed for safety concerns. In the open section, the ceiling ranges from about 6 to 16 feet in height, but it’s lower near the sides—watch your head!

The thickness of the cave’s roof varies from 8 to 24 feet, obviously thinner at the entrance and exit where the roof collapsed. Bring a sweater or jacket, as the temperature inside the cave is generally around 46ºF. A lantern is also essential, although a headlamp or flashlight (with extra batteries) will do in a pinch."
