Big and Little Bear Lakes

Old Station, California

Big and Little Bear Lakes Professional Review and Guide

"Most folks heading off into the backcountry north of Summit Lake hike to Echo Lake and the Twin Lakes. These are wonderful destinations, but if you want to take the path less traveled, one with a bit more mystery and certainly fewer human distractions, venture to the Bear Lakes. Big and Little Bear Lakes, captured in shallow basins on the northwest flank of a broad ridge that sweeps off the eastern side of Hat Mountain, are both relatively small. What they lack in size, however, they more than make up for in the clarity of their waters, their classical settings, and the enticing sense of remoteness that surrounds them. Make them the destination of a day hike, or tie them in to the Cluster Lakes Loop. Highlights: This hike arcs around the backside of Hat Mountain to a charming pair of secluded lakes."
