Elliott Mine Area Drive

Elliott Mine Area Drive Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This easily accessed route ascends to an intriguing and beautiful world of massive granite boulders in the Jacumba Mountains, at the edge of the Jacumba Wilderness about 0.2 mile north of the Mexican border. The boulders are piled into complex towers that form passageways and caves. A short hike east of the road is Smuggler’s Cave, a hollow said to have been used by smugglers and bandits in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Elliott mine isn’t much to see, but its lofty locale high on a rocky hill does provide broad views of the region. Valley of the Moon, a similar area to the east in the wilderness, is a popular hiking destination."

Seven of us met at the Jacumba off ramp at 9:00 am. We got gas and
headed for the trail head at 9:15. Everyone aired down and we started
up the trail. We ended up getting to the mine at 11:00 so we took a
lunch break at one of the side trails on top of a hill. There was a
real good view and the sky was clear, you could see for miles. After
lunch we went south to the border fence then west and up to the shelf
road. One of the guys got a flat. He had a good spare and everything
he needed to get it changed and we got back on the trail in no time.
We then went down the shelf road and out to old 80. We got there at
2:00 and that was the end of the trip for five of the group. From
there, Scott and I crossed to the north side of 8 and did the Table
Mountin area. There are a lot of trails to check out in the area. We
went down and up the small dropoff then headed back to 8. We got back
to the Jacumba off ramp at 5:00. It was a good run with real nice and
clear weather. Thanks to everyone that was able to make the run.JEFF
