Once accessible to off-road vehicles, the 4-square-mile expanse of Harper Flat now lies protected within a state wilderness area. Four-wheel-drive roads approach it from the west and south, but a more interesting route for foot travelers is by way of Harper Canyon on the north. In the first mile south of Kane Springs Road, you skirt the Cactus Garden, an area where most common species of cacti in the Colorado Desert, especially barrel cactus, are represented Some specimens near the road are 7 feet tall.
