Rush Creek Open Space Preserve Professional Review and Guide
"Stretching along the banks of the Petaluma River is a flat fertile region with coastal salt marshes and diked farmland. Rush Creek Open Space Preserve is adjacent to a vast wetland area along the Petaluma River and surrounded by oak woodlands. The preserve lies between Burdell Mountain and the Petaluma River delta. The 528-acre open space is a resting and nesting site for thousands of migrating and resident waterfowl. Within the preserve is Rush Creek Marsh; Pinheiro Ridge, a low 200-foot hill; and Cemetery Marsh, named for the adjacent Valley Memorial Park Cemetery. The trail follows the Pinheiro Ridge Fire Road (an old ranch road) along the base of Pinheiro Ridge. The hike skirts the south edge of Rush Creek, then loops around Cemetery Marsh to Black John Slough, a unit of the Petaluma River Marsh. Throughout the hike are vistas of the expansive tidal wetlands and Burdell Mountain"
