The Rim Rock Trail is the most scenic but also the most difficult trail in Skyline Wilderness Park. The trail follows the sinuous north ridge of Marie Creek Canyon to the 1,630- foot summit of Sugarloaf Peak, the park’s highest peak. On clear days, the views extend to San Francisco Bay, Mount Tamalpais, and Mount Diablo. This hike utilizes the Rim Rock Trail to Sugarloaf Peak, then returns through the canyon on the exposed south-facing slope. Along the trail are the best views of Lake Marie. The return loop continues under a lush riparian forest with towering alder and bay trees.
