Rector Reservoir Alternate Trail Professional Reviews and Guides

"This severely underappreciated hike climbs steeply to the top of a ridge on the east side of Napa Valley. It then traverses the top of the ridge, leading to a rock outcropping near famed Stags Leap, a series of volcanic crags and cliffs. Incredible views, stretching from downtown San Francisco in the south to towering Mount Saint Helena at the north end of the Napa Valley, are constant along the hike’s entire length. In terms of grand views of classic Wine Country terrain, this trail is tough to beat.

The Rector Reservoir Wildlife Area is an oddly shaped tract of land that is owned by the Department of Veterans Affairs but is administered by the California Department of Fish and Game. The trail climbs a ridge leading to Stags Leap, a massive volcanic formation much like the Palisades at the north end of the Napa Valley near Calistoga, with spectacular views of the Napa Valley and much of the northern San Francisco Bay Area."

"Rector Reservoir Wildlife Area, located east of Yountville, covers 415 rugged acres on the south side of Rector Reservoir. The oblong reservoir was formed in 1946 by damming Rector Creek. The lake is tucked into the hills on the western slope of Haystack Peak near the mouth of Rector Canyon. The area, managed by the California Department of Fish and Game, consists of oak woodland and chaparral. Elevations range from 200 feet to 1,900 feet."
