Wiashal Trail to Cole Canyon

Wiashal Trail to Cole Canyon Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Cole Canyon is a short, narrow canyon with 800-foot walls. The stream-fed canyon is located at the edge of Temecula Valley by Murrieta and east of Slaughterhouse Canyon. Access to the canyon from the Santa Rosa Plateau is via the Wiashal Trail, a demanding hike that follows the ridge straddling Slaughterhouse and Cole canyons.

The trail begins at the visitor center and climbs along the spine of the mountain from summit to summit, with frequent elevation gains and losses. From the ridge are panoramic views of the Santa Anas and the Santa Margaritas. The route descends from the arid ridge into riparian, oak-filled Cole Canyon."

"The Wiashal (wee-uh-shawl) Trail descends from the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve to an open-space preserve in Cole Canyon at the edge of Murrieta. It is the steepest trail in the reserve and has some areas with poor traction; a trekking pole and reliable sense of balance are helpful. Remarkably hard-core mountain bikers love this trail and have nicknamed it the Superman Trail. It features great views and some of the oldest chaparral in Southern California." Read more
