San Mateo Canyon Professional Review and Guide
"Following the canyon may be a bit problematic. You’ll be tracing the latest incarnation of the San Mateo Canyon Trail, originally constructed before the turn of the century. Trail maintenance is occasional. Floods routinely obliterate the trail where it passes close to the creekbed, and rapid regeneration of riparian vegetation and grasses tends to conceal what remains. Poison oak, nettles, and other irritating plants abound along the streambed, so wear pants in these areas. Beware of ticks, especially in the spring."
