After a good rain, upper San Mateo Canyon brims with cold, sparkling water. If you come on a sunny winter day, you can often enjoy a couple of hours of very comfortable, almost summer-like temperatures. By midafternoon low sunlight floods the canyon, and you may be tempted to slide into one of the shallow pools for a quick cooling off.

Additional directions to the trailhead. Clinton Keith turns into Tenja road, but after about 10 miles... you need to turn right to stay on Teneja. This is a great trail with up and down slopes. You cross the river bed a few times. with beautiful landscape. It was slightly foggy on the day we went and and it remined me hiking in the Andes Mountains. Our dog loved it.
