Pinyon Trail

Pinyon Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Pinyon Trail (5E02) is an alternative route into Palm Canyon originating from Highway 74. It was constructed by the Coachella Valley Trails Council in the 1990s. Starting at the Pinyon Flats Campground, it leads across a magnificent plateau covered with ribbonwoods, cacti, yuccas, and, of course, pinyon pines. It features great views of Santa Rosa Mtn. and the southern Desert Divide. It is easy to get lost in this part of the desert, so this trip is not recommended for beginning navigators. Adventurous hikers may make a loop, returning by the Palm Canyon Trail or Omstott Creek. For those wanting a truly wild backpacking trip from the Salton Sea to Palm Springs, the Pinyon Trail makes the critical link between the Cactus Springs Trail and Palm Canyon."

"The Pinyon Trail traverses a lush desert garden between Palm Canyon and Pinyon Flats. Go on a cool day to enjoy the ribbonwood, cactus, yucca, agave, nolina, and, of course, pinyon pines. You will descend into the badlands of the Santa Rosa Mountains. The dominant vegetation is ribbonwood, a beautiful cousin of chamise found few places except between the Desert Divide and Warner Springs, and in the Santa Monica Mountains. The trail weaves in and out of minor canyons before switchbacking down to Omstott Creek, climbing out, and then dropping in again to meet the Palm canyon Trail." Read more
