The first half mile or so is a paved road to the heliport. From here the dirt fire road continues to San Olene Lookout. This a good beginner hike with about 1,500 feet of elevation gain. It only took me about 1.5 hours to climb the 3 miles from Chantry Flats, and about 30 minutes to come back down. There isn't much to look at along the way as the majority of the hike is along the back side of the ridge. The last half mile or so is on the front of the ridge with a sweeping view of San Jacinto, Saddleback Mountain (Orange County), Catalina Island, and Downtown Los Angeles. There is a trail leading up the ridge from the lookout point that may connect to the other trails from Chantry Flats to Mt. Wilson, but it is not on any maps I have looked at. I will try it next time I go to see where it ends up. It may be more busy on a weekend, but on Friday I was the only one on the trail the entire time. And you can't hear the nearby 210 freeway from the lookout, making it that much more quiet and enjoyable.
