Native Americans lived on the site of Vallecito Regional Park for thousands of years. Then came the Spanish conquistadors, Kit Carson and General Kearny, the forty-niners and the Conestoga wagons, and then, the stagecoaches. Vallecito oasis is on the main southern route westward from St. Louis, which goes through Texas to avoid mountains and bad weather. The last water is near Yuma on the Colorado River, and then there’s nothing but a hundred miles of trackless, dry wasteland.
