The Sunset Trail, opened in 1993, facilitates easy access by foot to the entire west rim of the high Laguna Mountain plateau. Like its analog to the east—the sunrise-facing Pacific Crest Trail—the Sunset Trail offers sweeping views, but on the “sunset” side. You’ll almost invariably get the most out of this trail if you start early. As the sun rises unseen in the east, you can look down on either an immense “ocean” of low clouds hugging the coast and foothills or, on really clear days, the blue ocean itself. This hike will introduce you to the initial stretch of the Sunset Trail, which takes you to an agreeable destination called Water of the Woods.

We happened to wander onto this trail while journeying through Mt. Laguna. We decided to wander off the path of Big Laguna Lake Trail, and up a mountain. We wandered around for about an hour, and ended up onto the Sunset Trail. We decided to follow the trail, and were sure glad we did. The views toward the west were breathtaking. It truly lived up to its name. Wandering around the mountain was very scenic. Certain areas were totally covered in forest. It reminded me of a scene from an old Disney cartoon. The trail was quiet and cool. Being that it was in December, there were still patches of snow here and there. As we wound around East, the views of the small valley were also very tranquil. I had remarked that I couldn't believe that this was all in our own backyard. It was hard to believe at times that we were still in San Diego County. Many scenes reminded me of my trips to Colorado. This trail is a must for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. This is a trail well worth the drive, and effort.
