Dust off your map-and-compass skills—you’ll need them on this approach to Sombrero Peak via the rolling McCain Valley plateau. The peak stays largely hidden behind growths of chaparral and intervening ridges until you’re practically upon it. To make matters more difficult, trail signs tend to come and go, and many of the roads and four-wheel-drive trails shown on the USGS topo map of the area have become overgrown (and some new roads have appeared in the interim).
