North of the Laguna Mountains and east of the green meadows rimming Cuyamaca Reservoir, Oriflamme Canyon cuts a curved gash in the mountain escarpment—a natural passage leading to the brown floor of the desert. Over many centuries, a well-beaten pathway through Oriflamme Canyon allowed local Indians to migrate easily between winter homes in the desert and summer encampments in the Cuyamaca Mountains. This pathway was also a part of the Yuma Trail, a main route between Indian settlements along the Colorado River and fishing villages at San Diego Bay.
