This point-to-point route, from paved Sunrise Highway to paved Highway 79, links the Laguna Mountain Recreation Area and Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. The trails are generally marked all the way—but navigational skills are suggested on this trip since there are several turns to make and the area is quite remote. The only potable water found near the route is at Granite Spring, toward the end of the trip. It’s best, then, to carry all the water you’ll need. Mountain bikers can use the route described here, except that they must finish on East Mesa Fire Road in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park and not use the west end of the Harvey Moore Trail, which is reserved for hikers and horses.
