On the high slopes of Mount Hamilton, Joseph D. Grant County Park sprawls over 9,000 acres of oak-dotted grassland, less than 15 miles from downtown San Jose. Even though the park is bisected by Mount Hamilton Road, it has an isolated feel to it—I’ve hiked for hours here and seen only birds, cows, and wild pigs. This hike begins near an old ranch compound, skirts Grant Lake, then climbs through an oak savanna to the ridgeline. After a sustained jaunt along the grassy ridge, you’ll drop through grassland peppered with oaks, then retrace your steps back to the parking lot.
