Stoddard Peak (4624´) is located on the shoulder of Ontario Peak overlooking San Antonio Canyon. Despite its diminutive stature among the huge peaks circling the canyon, Stoddard offers excellent views of Mt. Baldy and is an enjoyable exercise hike or half-day excursion. The peak and nearby canyon were named for William Stoddard, who, in 1880, founded the first of many mountain resorts in this area. These resorts were immensely popular before the development of air conditioning. Ranchers sent their families up into the high country to escape the oppressive heat that blankets the Inland Empire during the summer months.
