Black Hill Trail Professional Reviews and Guides

"Black Hill (also known as Black Mountain) is an ancient 661-foot volcanic peak in Morro Bay State Park. There is a short easy trail to the rocky summit and a longer forested route. The longer route climbs through the shade of a eucalyptus forest, an oak woodland and Monterey pine groves. From the rocky summit are panoramic views of Morro Bay and the estuary, Estero Point, Cayucos, Chorro Valley, and the nearby morros of Cerro Cabrillo and Hollister Peak. The ocean views span from Montana de Oro to San Simeon."

"Morro Bay State Park is a highly developed recreational area complete with golf course and a campground equipped with showers. Hiking in the park is limited, but the trail to Black Hill is a unsigned trail. The path wanders and climbs gently for the first half-mile, gaining steepness as it nears the apex. Views open up of the beautiful estuary and the sandspit behind you. As the trail climbs around the hill, there are remnants of old structures and a water containment tower."

Nice little hike we did with our 22 month old in backpack. You DO drive across the golf course, we missed the turn the first time around.

This trail is right by my house. It is an easy family hike to the top. Maybe a ten minute climb. Beautiful views of Morro Bay and Morro Rock, with 360 degree views once on top. This makes a great place to take in a sunset while visiting Morro Bay.
