Fort Ord / Toro Creek Loop Professional Review and Guide

"Fort Ord is the latest jewel in the mountain biking crown of the South Bay/Central Coast region. Once home to 25,000 army and civilian personnel, Fort Ord was founded as a cavalry post in 1917 and served as a major training ground during World War II. Two-thirds of the 28,000-acre former military holdings were conveyed to the Bureau of Land Management by the U.S. Army after the base closed in 1994. Primarily devoted to preserving wildlife habitat, the area currently boasts 50 miles of multi-use roads, fire roads, tank tracks and singletrack. The trails offer a diverse playground of opportunities, from family-oriented paved roads to steep and twisting singletrack roller coasters. Local riders regard the entire land mass as 'the best.' Their advice is just to show up and go play - trails are generally well signed. The following two rides are mere introductions to what Fort Ord has to offer. One warning, though; pay heed to the signs surrounding the explosives area. Unexploded mines and an assortment of artillery lurk beneath the ground's surface. The good news: the land that the open trails traverse is completely safe. Nothing more exciting than the random bullet has been found for some time by any of the thousands of recreational users who descend on this area every weekend."

Nice place to rideand hike, but be careful. There are transients breaking in to vehicles here and mine was one of them. I went on a short hike and was away for only twenty minutes.

Ford Ord has a good mix of ups and downs and a variety of trails that are challenging for riders of all levels. It would be best to go out with a local rider of equal experience to ride the best trails. Exploring is is great too, if you have the time.
