South Fortuna Trail Professional Reviews and Guides

"Unlike the view from Cowles Mountain, Fortuna Mountain’s expansive vantage encompasses a good deal of still undeveloped country. Mission Trails Regional Park maps label the original 1291-foot Fortuna Mountain as “North Fortuna Mountain.” On those same maps, a 1094-foot subsidiary peak to the southeast is now unimaginatively dubbed “South Fortuna Mountain.” From either summit, you can look southeast to 1194foot Kwaay Paay Peak, 1379-foot Pyles Peak, and, finally, 1591-foot Cowles Mountain. It’s easy to see why this linear range of mountains is called “Long Mountain” on century-old maps."

This is a great Mission Trails hike. There's some really good stair climbing to get the blood pumping but it is still a pretty moderate hike, worth the awesome views. Use a map or pay attention to where you are going, because there are many interconnected trails and it can get a little confusing.

Great hike! Best to start at the parking lot on Mission Gorge (not at the visitors center). Bring plenty of water and a snack, as the first part of the trail is uphill. You have to wind around one mountain to get to the dry creek crossing, then up a small mountain to get to the base. From there it is straight up. Beautiful views, great for photos. Hard to believe that this is right in the midst of civilization. Keep your eyes open for "critter" tracks. I saw plenty on the trail, not all were domestic tracks. Take the time to talk to the park rangers in the visitors center. They have great knowledge of the park, and love to share their favorite trails with you.
