Marin Headlands Gerbode Valley Loop

Mill Valley, California

Marin Headlands: Gerbode Valley Loop Professional Review and Guide

"The Marin Headlands’ soft, rolling hills form a picturesque backdrop for travelers driving north across the Golden Gate Bridge, as well as a perfect platform for San Francisco city views that include the world’s most beautiful span. You’ll begin this hike at the valley floor, climb through coastal scrub along one side of the valley, then crest at the ridgeline and return on the other side of the valley. The entire loop sticks to fire roads and is easy to follow, but expect substantial mountain bike and equestrian traffic."

This is a VERY strenous hike-we are avid bike riders/time trialists and found this hike tough. It was worth it-especially once you get to the falls. This seems like a no-brainer-but be sure to take water and food with you. We saw many people doing this hike and had nothing with them-crazy! This took us almost 6 hours and we stopped only to take pictures and to snack, so plan a full day of hiking. Beautiful scenery, the campground staff are very knowlegable and helpful. We will do this one again when we are in the area!

If you like feeling like you are in the belly of the Redwoods, this is a great place. It is very quiet, we didn't see any wildlife and came across a few people. I prefer hikes with breath taking views, this does not offer that. However, we only hiked in half way and returned, don't know what it was like beyond that.
