"Russian Gulch is a narrow canyon cutting into coastal hills ?lled with redwoods and a rushing creek. The trail leads through this beautiful setting to a lovely waterfall. Nearby is an unusual sinkhole that is also worth visiting. Though much of it is traversed by CA 1, it is well removed from US 101, the main artery of transportation on the west side of California. It also falls a long way from major population centers like the Bay Area. This means that much of the Mendocino coast retains a very low-key atmosphere. Of course there are still attractions that draw many visitors, the quaint town of Mendocino being chief among them, but the pace is still slow and the number of people not nearly as high as other coastal destinations. This means that the trails in the numerous state parks are not crowded and retain a very rustic feel. One of the best ways to experience this beautiful area is to hike in Russian Gulch State Park."
