    Big Split Rock Canyon

Big Split Rock Canyon Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Big Split Rock Canyon may well be the most fun slot canyon hike in California. Although shorter and less varied than the Ladder and Big Painted Canyons loop, it offers nonstop action in a very tight slot. This is a great hike for kids, but those who are broad shouldered may find it difficult, and claustrophobic hikers will not enjoy the trip. You’ll likely be turning sideways in the squeeze section, so a small and light pack is preferable.

The sandy canyon is at first wide enough to support some vegetation, including smoke trees, cat’s claw, creosote, and cheesebush. Watch for fascinating tapestries of dried mud on the walls. The canyon soon narrows and you hike up between the soaring walls. In 0.4 mile, come to a three-way split. The center canyon has a slot and the right canyon with the towering face leads to many branches, all of which are interesting to explore. But this trip takes the left canyon, the most action-packed of them all."
