The added effort of climbing to Little Elk Lake will mostly take you away from the crowds found at nearby Sky High Lakes, Marble Valley, and other destinations on or near the Pacific Crest Trail. The comment in the "professional review" about a 20 mile hike refers to a circumnavigation of Red Mountain. You don't have to do the whole circuit to visit Little Elk Lake. To get even farther from the crowds, continue over the next ridge to Deep Lake.
