The Banner Peak and Mount Ritter area is one of the most exquisite in the Sierra Nevada. In the summertime the base of these peaks can be reached with a short hike of a couple of hours. The spires of the Minarets, the high glacial cirques, and the sparkling lakes, cascading falls, and lush meadows make this a favorite of many summer backpackers, hikers, and rock climbers. Its beauty is magnified in the winter. The area is a true winter wonderland that you will probably have all to yourself in late winter or early spring. A ski or snowboard descent of Mount Ritter is the focus of this trip, but the area offers many great touring options. Tours to Iceberg Lake, Nydiver Lakes, Garnet Lake, and Thousand Island Lake can all be made from Ediza Lake. A climb to the Banner-Ritter col and the descent of the glacier to Lake Catherine is a more serious endeavor but a great side trip to the main attraction.
