This 2500-foot climb over 5 miles of trail is only for very fit, hardcore hikers and their extremely fit dogs. It’s scenic, it’s long, and it’s tough. The vegetation along the driest sections is high-desert brush. The summer months bring wildflowers to the meadows and raging waters pouring out of Laurel Lakes into aspen-lined Laurel Creek. If you hike in the summer, head up the trail at sunrise. But it’s best to wait for the cooler temperatures of fall when the aspens burst into gold.
