Hilltop Pulkey's Pool Hot Spring

Hilltop (Pulkey's Pool) Hot Spring Professional Review and Guide

"A newer, smaller concrete tub fed by a hot spring source a few yards away. Atop a hill, this spring has a fantastic view of the surrounding countryside and the Sierra Nevada. Hilltop Hot Spring is a relatively new tub in the area, sometimes known as Pulkey’s Pool. The tub is similar to others nearby, consisting of a concrete tub fed by hot spring water piped from a few yards away. This tub can also be cleaned by draining it and diverting the water out. About 6 feet by 4 feet and 2 feet deep, Hilltop makes a nice bath, big enough for several people. This spring is lesser known than others in the area, but it does get crowded on weekends, particularly in summer. Primitive, except for construction of the hot tub and the piping of water into it."

Hilltop Hot Spring is one of the nicer and more convenient tubs off of Benton Road. If you are visiting Mammoth Lakes it is worth it to take a little detour and visit the hot spring. It is 13 miles southeast of Mammoth Lakes. To find it drive on Highway 395 and turn left on Benton Crossing Road, then drive towards the mountain about three miles and turn left onto a dirt road. Once you park you just follow the walkway to the tub. You actually can't tell if the tub is full from the parking area, so you have to walk all the way (it is a short distance) to it to see if you can fit. I think the maximum amount of people that can squeeze in is probably 8. It is a man-made stone pool fed by a tube connected to a natural spring about 50 feet away from the tub, complete with a kind of valve to control the temperature (it was about 100 degrees Fahrenheit when I visited). The panoramic views of the Eastern Sierra's snow-capped mountains are pretty spectacular. This is a wonderful spot to watch the sunrise and, with any luck, you will have the place to yourself.

Best: Year-round. Because it is located a short distance off the paved road, you can walk to the tub if the dirt road is too muddy or covered in snow.
