Ediza Lake

Ediza Lake Professional Review and Guide

"In a region of exceptionally stunning lakes, Shadow and Ediza are two of the loveliest. Both harbor views of the Ritter Range that are among the finest mountain landscapes in the Sierra Nevada. Rolling through green meadows, conifer forests, and rocky outcrops, the trail rises by gradual degrees up the valley of Shadow Creek in view of Volcanic Ridge, to the left (south). Some stretches have been finessed through rocky benches by the vigorous application of picks, shovels, and maybe a surgical stick or two of dynamite. The best of company, frolicsome Shadow Creek entertains us with music and assorted pretty little tricks, including a very clever cascade around an island of polished granite."

It is seven miles from Agnew Meadows trailhead to the lake. So, 14 mile round trip. I backpacked in on a Friday and out on a Sunday. The trail is excellent and well improved. When you approach lake take the trail to the left to go around the East side of the lake. I went to the West and ended up climbing on six foot bolders with my 55 lb pack (camera gear weights a lot!). Camping is currently only allowed on West side of lake and to the South. Plenty of places to pitch a tent. There are many easy day hikes from here to other lakes (Iceberg is just a mile or so up the hill.). Ediza is a BEAUTIFUL lake and you can see photos of it here that I've uploaded or on my site www.viewbyness.com.
