Paramount Ranch Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Hike through a movie/television set and along a quaint hillside to an overlook of Western Town set and region. Paramount Ranch is a pretty cool place. In 1927 Paramount Pictures bought the land and used it as a set for many major motion pictures of the day. Fans of old black-andwhite movies will undoubtedly feel a familiarity from the outset. Films featuring Buster Crabbe, Mae West, Marlene Dietrich, Gary Cooper, Leo Carillo, Randolph Scott, and many others were shot here before Paramount eventually sold the land in the 1950s. A man named William Hertz bought a portion and turned part of the parcel, still named Paramount Ranch, into a model of an old western town. Filming resumed almost immediately, mostly of westerns and television shows such as The Cisco Kid. The land was eventually purchased by the National Park Service in 1980, and filming still occurs there to this day, although less frequently."
